Am I Eligible for a Dental Implant Restoration?
June 29, 2022 12:40 amIf you are missing one or more of your teeth, you may be a good candidate for dental implants. Considered one of the most versatile tooth replacement options, dental implants can help you regain a functional smile that is long-lasting and natural-looking.
What Is a Dental Implant?
A dental implant is a permanent restorative treatment that is composed of two parts: a biocompatible titanium metal rod surgically implanted into your jaw to act as a replacement tooth root, and an attached crown that looks and feels like a natural tooth.
How Do I Get Dental Implants?
The process to get a dental implant comes in several phases. First, you’ll need a consultation. Your dentist will determine whether your gums are healthy enough and your jawbone is strong enough to support a dental implant.
If you’ve been missing teeth for a long time, your jawbone can lose strength and density. In some cases, you might be eligible for a bone graft to help strengthen your jawbone to qualify for a dental implant. Otherwise, you’ll need to consider a different type of restorative treatment, like dental bridges or dentures.
If your gums and jawbone are a good match for the procedure, you can move forward with the oral surgery. Under the appropriate anesthesia, a hole will be made in your gums so the implant can be inserted. Over the next few months, the rod should fuse to your jawbone in a process called osseointegration. Next, this strong foundation will receive a crown, bridge, or denture to complete your dental implant.
Your new tooth will likely remain firmly anchored to your jawbone as long as you maintain good oral hygiene and a balanced diet, and avoid tobacco products.
However, a dental implant and/or its attached crown, bridge, or denture can fail due to various reasons. In this case, you’d be eligible for a restoration of your original dental implant.
