Four Types of Dental Bone Grafts
December 21, 2023 9:00 amOn your path to your perfect smile, you may encounter a complication that requires a bone graft. While the process can sound scary and almost like something out of the mad scientist’s playbook, the process of dental bone grafts is rather straightforward, safe, and effective.
Types of Dental Bone Grafts
When your jaw lacks adequate volume or density to support the restorative work your dentist has planned, your dentist will examine your unique situation and determine which of these four dental bone graft types is most appropriate for your mouth.
1. Autogenous Bone Graft
This type of graft surgically takes bone from one part of your body and transplants it into another. In the case of oral surgery, bone may be taken from the chin, jaw, lower leg, hip, or skull and placed into the jaw.
2. Allograft Bone Graft
This next type of graft takes the bone of a generous donor to a human tissue bank and transplants it into the recipient.
3. Xenograft Bone Graft
Xenograft takes bone from an animal and transplants it into you. While this may seem a bit unorthodox, it is a commonly used surgical technique with a well-documented success rate. This grafted bone even has the potential to become your bone.
4. Alloplastic (“Synthetic”) Bone Graft
This last type of graft combines a synthetic version of the protein found in your body and combines it with a collagen sponge. Your body then grows bone naturally with no residual graft material left over.
