When Do I Need a Tooth Extraction?
July 29, 2022 1:11 amIn dental care, a tooth extraction is a last resort recommended only when the natural tooth can’t be saved and/or it is not in the patient’s best interest to keep it. This can be the case for problematic wisdom teeth, as well as in the following situations:
Loose Teeth
Adult teeth should not feel loose. If you notice that your adult teeth seem to be loose, schedule an appointment with Dr. Marteeny immediately. Loose teeth can be a sign of extensive damage to your teeth, their roots, and your gums. Depending on the severity of dental disease, you may need an extraction.
Severe Infection
Pain is a sign from your body that something is off. For example, if you have gum or jaw pain, bleeding, swelling, sensitivity, and/or unexplainable bad breath, you may have an infection. Schedule an appointment with us immediately so that we can treat the issue. If it’s minor, we may be able to perform root canal therapy to save the tooth. But don’t ignore it–delaying treatment could result in a tooth extraction that could’ve been prevented!
Badly Fractured Tooth
We can often save broken or chipped natural teeth with bonding or a dental crown. However, a tooth with a very bad fracture that extends down to the gum line or below it may need to be extracted. If you damage a tooth, call us as soon as possible for same-day emergency treatment. The longer you delay, the more likely it is that painful complications will develop.
