How long does a dental crown last?

A dental crown typically lasts between 5 to 15 years, depending on the material used, your oral hygiene practices, and lifestyle factors like grinding or clenching your teeth. Porcelain crowns match the surrounding teeth better but may wear down faster, while metal crowns are more durable. Regular dental check-ups and proper care, including brushing and flossing, can extend the life of your crown. However, even with the best care, a crown may eventually need to be replaced due to normal wear and tear.

How many appointments are needed for a crown replacement?

Just like getting a new crown, replacing a dental crown usually requires two appointments. During the first appointment, the dentist removes the old crown, makes any necessary adjustment to the tooth, and takes impressions for the new crown. A temporary crown is placed to protect the tooth in the meantime. In the second appointment, typically scheduled a few weeks later, the new permanent crown is fitted, adjusted, and cemented in place.

Are crowns better than veneers for front teeth?

Crowns and veneers both serve to improve the appearance and function of front teeth, but they also have different uses. Crowns are typically better for teeth that are significantly damaged, worn, or have undergone root canal treatment, as they cover the entire tooth and provide more strength. Veneers, on the other hand, are thin shells that cover only the front surface of the tooth and are better suited for cosmetic changes, like covering stains or minor chips. The choice depends on the condition of your teeth and your specific needs.

What should I do about a loose dental crown?

If you have a loose dental crown, it’s important to get in touch with our team as soon as possible. Avoid chewing on that side of your mouth to prevent the crown from falling off or damaging the underlying tooth. You can use temporary dental cement available at pharmacies to hold the crown in place until your appointment. Do not try to fix it yourself using household glues or adhesives. Dr. Marteeny and our Alvin dental team can assess the cause of the looseness and either re-cement the crown or replace it if necessary.
