What’s the difference between an occlusal guard and a mouthguard?

An occlusal guard and a mouthguard are both oral devices used to protect teeth. An occlusal guard is specifically designed to prevent teeth grinding and clenching, and a mouthguard prevents sports injuries to the mouth and gums. If you commonly wake up with jaw pain or have experienced tooth sensitivity, an occlusal guard can help protect your teeth. If you play a sport, our custom athletic mouthguards can cover the teeth and gums to prevent and reduce injury to the teeth, lips, and gums.

Do Occlusal Guards help with TMJ?

Patients looking for jaw pain relief or ways to prevent teeth grinding and clenching often ask us about nightguards. A nightguard can help some patients by relieving some of the pressure put on the jaw and teeth, preventing teeth grinding, clenching, and tooth enamel decay. Occlusal guards are similar, except they can be worn during the day as well if you suffer from grinding symptoms outside of sleep. If you notice signs of TMJ, like jaw pain and teeth grinding or clenching, we encourage you to ask us about TMJ therapy options like occlusal guards. If we can’t find a solution, we’re happy to refer you to one of our trusted experts in TMJ management.

Is a custom mouthguard better than a store-bought?

A custom mouthguard is the best type of mouthguard as it is custom-made for you. Our custom mouthguards in Alvin are created with our modern technology to specifically fit the structure of your teeth and mouth. The result of a custom mouthguard over a store-bought is a comfortable fit and the best protection.
