At Magnolia Family Dental, we do all we can to help you have a smooth recovery after any sort of invasive dental treatment. Patients getting root canal treatment often have questions about aftercare, such as which foods to eat and which foods to avoid. Here is some general information about how to care for your mouth after root canal therapy!

Root Canal Aftercare

After your root canal treatment, we’ll provide you with instructions for pain management and caring for your tooth. It’s normal to experience some discomfort for a few days after treatment but it should fade within a week. While specific care instructions can vary on your treatment plan, we usually encourage patients to brush and floss daily to keep the area clean and prevent infection. Additionally, drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

Foods to Eat After a Root Canal

Soft, nutrient-rich foods are the best option after root canal therapy. These will be comfortable to eat and will provide the vitamins and minerals needed for healing. Some foods we particularly recommend include:

  • Yogurt
  • Smoothies
  • Applesauce
  • Scrambled eggs
  • Soup
  • Oatmeal
  • Cream of wheat
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Macaroni and cheese

What to Avoid After a Root Canal

Avoiding irritation will help your mouth to recover as soon as possible after root canal therapy. Skip hard and sticky foods like chewy bread, carrots, gum, nuts, taffy, caramel, and candy. Do not use tobacco products. Plus, avoid very hot or cold food and drinks that may cause sensitivity.
